Commercial fishing is at the root of Seattle’s original design and growth. The construction of the Fishermen’s Terminal in 1914 and the Ballard Locks in 1916 made Seattle a hub for fishermen by offering a place to moor, repair and provision Puget Sound-based boats. Fishing and maritime activity remain a pillar of Seattle’s economy and heritage.
Jackson Chihuly’s ongoing project, Trawl is a material analysis of the commercial fishing industry depicted through images of found still life. The photos thus far have been made at the Seattle Fishermen’s Terminal and Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham, Washington.
